Default Tank Lift Broke

I installed a nice "t-bone"tank lift last year. I'm riding last weekend and I thought my front end was falling apart.&nbsp\\;Every bump made horrible sounds.&nbsp\\;I checked my suspension and the engine mounts. I was really afraid something was about to fall off the bike.

Got home and really tried to inspect the bike. Guess what? The bottom part of the tank lift fractured on both sides - but in resting position, you couldn't see any gap (all looked normal). But when I hit bumps, the tank was clanging around.

I just purchased a new tank lift. Found a guy on ebay who sells one made from solid aluminum - CNC machined.&nbsp\\;Looks very solid - no welds etc. Will install it this weekend.

Just an FYI to keep an eye on this.

I wouldn't think a tank lift would take enough stress to break even a weak weld.&nbsp\\; Would dif. like to see pics.

RIDA, the stress is not the culprit.

the harmonics are.

A wild guess here......
the weld did not fracture,
metal next to the weld did.

Yea, I would like to see some pics of this too. Mine has been making a loud clanking noise too. I checked the bolts and tightned them up some more. But still clanking on bumps. Will check mine out tonight for fractures. Mine are homemade though, so noone to blame but myself

Hey Mud,
&nbsp\\;
You are absolutely correct.
&nbsp\\;
It fractured across the bottom support on either side of the weld.&nbsp\\; It wasn't the weld itself.&nbsp\\; Both sides fractured.&nbsp\\; I'll try to take a photo a bit later.
&nbsp\\;
It was one of Jackyl's designs.&nbsp\\; Don't get me wrong - I like his product.

wow thats surprising. i have made and sold over 1000 of them in&nbsp\\;3+ years and this is the first time i have ever heard of this happening. question for you,&nbsp\\;did you tighten everything down when you installed the lift? because if it wasnt on tight, i could see then how it could of broke. i have had mine on for 3+ years and 17,000 miles and never have had a problem. send me your address and i will send you a new lift, just make sure you tighten&nbsp\\;this one&nbsp\\;down.&nbsp\\;please send me the broken one so i can take a&nbsp\\;look&nbsp\\;at it and inspect it. jackyl

I have the CNC lift - not on yet - but it really looks nice - a bit more expensive, but the finish is really nice.
