Obviously there's nothing authoritative about these articles,
but it's not like Harley has contradicted them or they've issued a retraction.
And it's not the only place where I've seen that kind of statement.

rockon, this particular article is from 2005, and,
yes, HD did issue a retraction, in the form of a letter
to everyone that received the original paperwork
calling for the 15,000 mile free replacement.
Myownself, I am going by the original paperwork.

Figures they'd do that. I'm still kind of a noob with this stuff, haven't been part of the Harley community for very long. Just tryin' to help where I can, but I'll be quiet now.
So now that I know this, what's the going rate for parts and labor on the primary bearing replacement?[>:]

John, I know this isn't the response you were asking for but others have stated they have paper work saying HD will replace the primary bearing at 15,000 mile intervals. I bought my 06 St Bob in Oct 05. My owners manual stated that they would replace the bearing at 15,000 miles. I received a letter from them dated Feb 28, 2006 stating "As a result of our ongoing testing on the 2006 Dyna models, we have now determined that the precautionary maintenance requirements we recommended during the Initial Care program are no longer required. The items affected are as follows:
+ Inner primary bearing replacement at 15,000 mile intervals is no longer necessary.
+ The fluid change intervals have been extended as follows:
> The new Transmission oil change interval has been set at 20,000 miles.
> The Inner Primary oil change interval has been set at 10,000 miles.
> The Engine oil change interval remains at 5,000 miles, which is the standard reqirement for
allcurrent production, street legal Harley-Davidson engines."
That is one of the reasons I took the extended warranty. It doesn't say they won't cover the cost of replacement, it states it is no longer necessary. Mine has 33,000 miles and I have had no problem. I might have just jinxed mine now. Anyway, good luck with it.

RE: Anyone had primary bearing replaced outside 2 year warranty?
Yesterday, called my dealer (South Richmond Harley) and asked if they were familiar with the Inner Primary Bearing issues. The service guy said no. I explained that I thought mine was going bad and that the bike was one month out of warranty.
I immediately told them I had a copy ofan addendum to the owners manual which stated replacement of the IPB would be done on Harley's dime at 15,000 miles. I did not offer the letter which said this was no longer necessary.
I e-mailed him a copy of the addendum letter and followed up later on in the day with a phone call. I was pleasantly surprised, and impressed, when he told me they would take care of it.
Hope this helps anyone facing this issue.

A little added info. As you may know, there was a recall on the early 06 Dynas dealing with the transmissions and a related false neutral. I have not had the recall work done and the dealer saw this when i called about the IPB.
The recall work requires the dealer to remove the primary covers and go into the tranny. If you have a IPB issue and haven't had the recall work done, they may be willing to fix the bearing while doing the recall work.

It was a voluntary recall initiated after a couple accidents were caused when the operators of early 06 Dynas thought they were in neutral because the light indicated such. The bikes then jumped into first or second gear unexpectedly.
