Default 5000 Mile Service

I did a search on the forums for what others have paid for a 5K service, and it was a lot less than the three local dealers I talked to around here - the low was $400 and the high was $483 (using synthetic oil). They said this was based on 3.4 hours labor + the fluids/filter. Seems like a lot to me. $100 shop rate + $100 in oil/gasket/filter???

Changed all my own fluids and cleaned the air cleaner myself instead of paying the dealer to do it. Without the dealer needing to do those things, my 5k cost $85. Shop rate here in Eastern NC is $65 an hour.

Take that cash you'd have to fork out to the dealer and buy a service manual (~$60), and any additional tools you'll need to do this stuff on your own.

Look in your owners manual, it tables out the services performed at each interval (1k... 5k...etc). The 5k is very simple. A majority of the "service" consists of "checks" (i.e., check brake pads, inspect fuel lines for leaks...etc). Unless you discover something that you don't think you can tackle with the service manual, and this forum as a resource, you should be able to get through everything on your own, and keep the dealer out of it.

My local HD dealer charges some where about the $250 range for the 5k service, but even that I think is a rip off.

A one time investment in tools and a manual will more than pay for itself, including a jack. I've done the 1000 and 5000 oil changes myself, no big deal.

I for one will start to do my own service that I feel comfortable with. With all the education on the workings of these bikes and engines I have aquired over one year of being on the forum I am starting to feel comfortable. Its part of ownership.

I am going to do it myself this weekend. No way I am paying $400! Maybe $200. I will pickup the filter/o-ring - I think I read on another forum Amsoil was better than H-D Synthetic.
