Brief Total Electrical Shutdown - WTF?

Brief Total Electrical Shutdown - WTF?
I'm riding in a light rain yesterday from Bandera back to Dallas and out of the blue, the bike dies. The speedometer dropped to 0 and all lights were off. I tried to turn on the flashers while coasting, but the entire dash was dead. It was as if the battery was disconnected. Then, about 15 seconds later, the flashers started working and the bike started and ran perfect for the remaining 250 miles of the trip home.
It was a cold, rainy, windy, crap day to be out on a bike. I feel lucky! All I could see at the time was my frozen butt waiting for a tow in the middle of nowhere.
Anyone have an idea why this might have happend?

I've seen main circuit breakers on the pre 06's trip due to heat and when they cool off they reset. Does your bike have this type of main circuit breaker, if so, I'd invest in one they are quite inexpensive. Also check your battery cables, loose cables will do odd things to electrical systems.

Have to agree with Mud on this one.
Mine did that last fall on a poker run. (-) terminal was 'snug' but not tight.
I had the battery out a couple days earlier and tightened the terminals with a phillips.
Now I carry a 6 point socket.

My previously owned sportster did it to me on a benefit run .
As I put on my turn light it went out and all speedo lights went blank .
After sitting a while it turned over slow , I had to get a boost .
Found out the wire that ran from the regulator to the stator was corroded .
After cleaning and lubing it it ran fine .

Happened to me once when I came out of the post office...nothing... no life signs at all...battery cable was loose. I think when it goes out and comes back again it's a connectivity issue. Good luck!
