Default Axle Nut

I just finished removing my rear wheel.

In the process, I damaged the axle nut. I think I ever so slightly bent the thread in it, because I can't finger tighten it all the way onto the axle.

Anyway, I'm figuring I'll have to replace it. I'm assuming I can pick up a nut this size at an auto or hardware store.

Is there anything special I should look out for with the new nut?

This may sound like a stupid question, but I'm new and don't want to risk a failure. I'm guessing if a lug nut is good for a car/truck it'll hold up on the bike.

As always, any and all replies are welcome.

Thanks,

Ray.

Ray,

get a new nut from HD. part # 8039. About 2 and a half bux.

You may not have a damaged nut or the threads on the axle.
Run it on with a socket and see if you notice extra resistance.
If so, get a new nut.

Thanks for the replies!

Mud,

Lots of resistance. Tried wrenching it on last night. No go.

I was hoping to avoid the dealer, due to it's an hour's drive away.

Better safe than sorry tho.

Ray.

Check the axle also. Maybe the nut is ok or was ok but the axle threads were nicked. If the axle threads are nicked, buying a new nut won't fix it. Get an inspection mirror and check it all the way around.

It was the nut. I got it tapped at work today. Went right on after that.

Thx for the reply.
