If you can't afford a MSF class, then pick up a book called "Proficient Motorcycling" by John? Hough - may be off on the first name.

If pretty much lists out most of the basics for riding that the MSF does plus goes into better explanations of why your bike acts like it does.

Main difference is the MSF course has folks that set up cones and do the exercises before you do so you can see how they're done. Also it allows you to try things you might not normally do in a secure environment.

David Hough is the author.

I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I HIGHLY recommend an advanced course. I had a CLOSE call and that course probably saved my life.

and if you're REALLY strapped,

go to your local library and see if they have an 'interlibrary' program.

the county that i am in has one and you can search the catalog online and have them send it to your local library.

that's how i read Proficient Motorcycling without buying it.

it's definitely good enough to OWN, but sounds like you're just as strapped as I was when i was looking for my first bike.

byt he way, the MSF that i took was $325
