+1 on the Fram being junk!!! Cardboard endplates on the media, minimal paper compared to quality name brands and stamped steel by-pass spring instead of coil springs.
If HD is anything like other manufactures then yes they will use the low bidder, however it is the low bidder that meets their specifications. They don't just but the cheapest they can get and stick their name on it. As far as filter companies giving out thefilter info and such it is out there you just have to find a parts person that will get it for you, most won't or don't even know it is available. When I worked auto parts Wix had a book giving general info by-pass valves, flow ratings and such, don't remember if it gave micron ratings though. If you buy a good, quality filter you can skip the HD one but you will likely pay about the same money.
