I bought the 06 Dyna Low Rider. They did a lot of redesign on the 06. Front tubes, frame, a lot of redesign in the engine. All for the better.

Yea the 6th gear pretty much stays out of it till 60+ but it is there. The transmission shifts like a dream. Positive no noise that I can hear.

They have incorporated some advanced systems on the 06 EFI. It has a 3 stage system to help keep the engine cool.

What ever you buy I know you will love it. I know I did.

Thanks to everyone for the advice - It is clear to me now that I need to go with the '06. Part of what was making me think of the '05 was the fact that they have it in stock -which is foolish considering that it is February, I'm in Canada, and I culdn't drive it for another 3 or 4 months anyway... hard to resist the impulse though.

I think I'll control my urges, and start trying to decide what accessories I should get at the time of purchase. I'm going to start another thread with that question in mind. Thanks again to everyone.

'06 Do not even remotely consider anything else. You will be surprised how useful that 6th gear is. You can easily get into it between 55 and 60 which is where HD tells you to use it. Although you can wind it up toward 65 with no prob before shifting. Couple the new EFI and the choice is easy. 2K is nothing for these features, the beefier frame and general better handling.

Some other differences worth considering between the two is:

The 05 came with a two up seat, the 06 is a solo seat
The 05 does have a better handlebar setup for me anyway then the 06 does
The 05 has the passenger pegs with it the 06 you have to add them
The 05 with a carb is easier to adjust by yourself.
$ 2000 is alot of money.
Lets face it any bike before 2007 will desireable as the EPA gets tougher and tougher.

The 06 did get rid of the headlight eyebrow.
6 speed would be nice on the highway, just one more gear for me to forget which gear I am in
FI is the great especially for cold weather, hit the button and go.

I wil be honest and say that I love my 05, but if I knew then what I know now I probably would have gone with the 06. I bought my 05 in Aug 05 just when the 06 were hitting the dealers. Way too many questions about the bike to feel good about them at the time when they first came out. New tranny, EPA, etc. We all can see now that 06 are a very good bike.

I have a 2005 FXDI and I couldn't be happier. I wouldn't mind the six speed but from what I understand it is not an overdrive six so it really only drops the RPM's by a couple of hundred. I have no complaints about how my FXDI rides or handles and the 41mm (I think) forks are ok with me too.

For $2000 less you could change the final drive on the 2005 (which would drop the highway revs)and have a 95" kit done and possibly have enough $ to get a set of progressive shocks. I believe the 2005 would run away from the 2006.

Either way i don't think you can really go wrong.

2005 or 2006 they are both nice bikes!!!!!

Dropping the ration on a 5 speed would hinder the low end ratio. Yes it would help the high side, but with the six speed, you keep them both. But your right, they are both great bikes. ( the best is an 06 wideglide)
