You'll find the list on the table for 1,000 mile service - it's about 30 items and it would surely suck to have any of 'em come loose at any speed. They're all simple to get at.

I just did my 1000 mile service. I followed the list but used Mobil 20w-50 for the engine, Mobil 75w-90 in the primary, and Mobil 75w-140 in the transmission. My steering bearings were loose and I added the hardened washer item. I checked all the spokes using the screwdriver sound method and none were loose. I checked all critical fasteners and the cradle between the cylinders was loose as were the motor mounts. I lubed the cables with dryslide and checked the rear belt tension. Finally, I thought my oil filter was leaking a little but it was the two pipe thread plugs in the front of the oil filter housing, they were loose.

Cost to me was ~$75 because of all the synthetic lubricants but the value to me is priceless. I don't trust other mechanics to do all these things. Having a service manager between you and the mechanic adds a level of deniability that I'm just not comfortable with.

ALERT! On my 06 Superglide the OWNERS MANUAL IS WRONG. The DRAIN plugs for oil and trans are switched around in the manual. I thought it wasstrange that the oil was red.

Just completed the 5,000 service. The manual cost me $60 at the dealer, and $61 for filter and synthetic oil. Found the oils cheaper after I was done but live and learn. The o-rings Igot from work. The only problem was the torque screw on the primary stripped so getting that fixed cost more for the tools I didn't have normally. Less than half of the dealer, plus you know the condition of your bike better.

yea, you're foolish if you don't do it yourself. get a manual. given your occupation, you'll be rebuilding the bastard soon.

You will need a oil filter socket to get the filter off.A traditional car filter wrench will not fit. The dealers have them for the outragous price of $12 or so. I took my filter in to a Pep Boys and matched up the size in the store and got one for about $4.00. You might even find one at WalMart or any of the other cheap auto parts stores.
