Default Primary noise?

I took a girlfriend for a ride yesterday and i have some weird noise coming from inside the primary. I noticed it after I lowered it but after I tightened the belt it almost went away..... I hear it from time to time...... It's almost sounds like something hitting or rubbing inside the primary...... Could it be the chain? Transmission?

It got way bad with 2-up it made that noise the hole ride.... So I didnt go far maybe 7-8 miles..... I'm a little scared something major is going to happen...... Any ideas what this could be and what I can do to fix it?

Any help would be appreciated!

Donnie

OK i was looking in the book and it looks easy to check and adjust the the primary chain..... only thing I'm concerned about is that freaking shifter lever...... how hard is it to get the inspection cover off with that level there..... I took all the bolts out and its not coming off easy...... do i need to pry on it??

On my Softail the belt would rub inside the primary after I lowered it. By stiffening up the shocks and making sure the belt wasn't too loose it won't do it now, but if I ride 2-up I have to raise the bike some.

It sounded sorta like the tire rubbing on the fender or something and was only noticeable when I'd shut the throttle and pull the clutch.

The ribs on the outside of the belt make the "whirring" noise. I found this out by taking a green paint marker and marking across the outside of the belt. After a quick ride I was able to see where the belt was obviously rubbing on something inside the primary.

Next time I need to put a belt on I am going to see where the belt was rubbing and clearance it if I can. I suspect it's one the the primary bolt bosses that go by the trans pulley.
