I did Heather 1000 mile, have been worried about that warranty and extended warranty, it is too easy to spend that kinda $$$ for them to do it. Had my 20,000 mile check up and every since then have oil shooting out of the carb, and they bent my primary inspection cover so I have had to deal with primary fluid slowly coming from there.....never again, have some peeps that are authorized, small shops that do killer work.

I did my own and saved. Wish mine would have been free at 1k. Oh well

I have an 03 wide-glide. The absolute best thing I did was to buy the HD service manual, about $50. The owners manual is just OK but not enough info to do detailed work.. I have done all the work myself and looking at your mechanic background you are probably way ahead of me.

The second best think I did was to read all the tips on various threads in hdforum. I've asked a question or 2 and always got good answers, especially from some of the senior members. TCSTD has good info

I like Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 , so I'm going to do my own.
That does not make me right, it's just what I use.
I use Mobil 1 in everything I drive, so I'm a fan of that oil.

My dealer does the 1000 mi service free unless you want syn3 oil then they charge you the difference which is about $15. I would have them do the service at least once at 1000 to get the documentation for your warranty. Then just save your receipts for the rest of the time. KB

I was really thinking of doing mine myself also. I spoke to the dealer the other day and was going to schedule it and they told me their rate just went up, it's now $75 and hour! It should cost about $250-300 they said. That's crazy!!!!!!!

I need to get my 1,000 mile service done soon. It will cost me $290. It seems very high. I have been told that this is an important service and should be done at the dealer, not me; and if not, it may void the warranty. I do all my own work on my tractors, truck, and boat.
I feel that if all they do is change the fluids, check the air filter, and make sure some bolts are tight, I could do that. I will admit this is my first bike and I have some things to learn, but the $290 is a bit hard to take. I am not sure what to do here. I feel like a hooked fish.
