If this seems like a stupid question to you Harley guys,be gentle with me I've had loads of bikes, but never one with a fuel pump.
Are you talking accelerator pump on your carb vs fuel pump on an EFI??? Two different things entirely.....

I was just wondering why a carbed bike needs an accelerator pump.I know that fuel injection needs a fuel pump.

Although it looks pretty cool, I like the larger capacity tanks, holds more gas and less stopping, BUT it would be a great way to perpetuate stupidity\ignorance.

I can just hear them now...."nice sportster you got there", "is that a sporty?", "yeah, my girl has a sporty", "couldn't you handle a big twin, that you ride a sporty?", blah, blah, blah

Your accelerator pump is in/on the carburator itself. When you open the butterflys there is a pump that squirts extra fuel to aid acceleration load demands and retain a effecient AFR in cruise mode for mpg and epa. It is not a fuel pump as in supplying fuel to the carb supply bowl, that is done via gravity.
