Also on the Dyna's, the rear wheel and swingarm are attached to the back of the tranny so the whole assembly stays in line as the rubber smooths out the vibes of the motor. The rear "swingarm" on the softies pivots on the frame, so the motor has to be solidly mounted to keep the driveline in alignment. To smooth that motor, they then use counterbalancers.

Softails were designed to emulate the LOOK of a hard tail chopper. The Motor Company went to extraordinary lengths to keep the look including hiding the rear shock absorber. As hard tails DON'T have rubber mounted engines, the "look" demanded NO rubber engine mounts. Thus the "balanced" motor came into being in order to quell engine vibration.
Based on Softail sales, I'd say HD did a pretty good job of getting the "look" right and at the same time giving you a bike you can ride for some distance.
That said, I like my FXD better.
