What Is The Difference In Exhausts And Engines? Please Help...
How is everyone doing? I am new to the Harley scene and havequestions thatI cannot seem to find an answer to. I Bought an 08' Street Bob and I am currently searching for an exhaust thatI like. I feel limited because there are not very many choices for 08' FXDBs. I understand it as the engines are the the same throught all of Harley's line ups and an exhaust can be mounted to all the engines and that it is the mounting brackets on the exhaust that are different and is what makes exhaust so limiting. I am not possitive that my understanding is correct so my questions are:
1) Can I put an exhaust on my bike that says it is for a softtail or anyother bike?
2) Is there a difference in the engines?
3) Why do exhaust always specify a certain year and the year they are used for? Is it because of the mounting brackets?
4)Can i just get custom bracketing done if that is the only thing different?
Thanks for your help. This site has been great.

I'll give it a shot, but don't know all of the details you need:
1.No
2.Engines differ in terms of how they are mounted etc. but basic C.I.D. same for the most part
3.Yes
4. 'custom brackets' ? Why? Get your new pipes, and a hi-flo A/C and your fuel mgmt system

Since your questions got answered, I'll chime in: I've got an '08 Street Bob, as well. I had no problem looking through catalogs and finding alot of choices for exhaust. Where are you looking that you don't have "many choices"? You've got Vance & Hines, Thunderheader, Samson, Rhinehart/BUB, Cobra, Supertrapp, Python, Cycle Shack....shall I continue? Hell, just look at a Fat Book or Dennis Kirk catalog for starters.

I am going through the same thing looking for pipes for my 08 Super Glide. What I did not not realize until asking some questions here, was that not only do you need pipes but you also need a fuel management sytsem (Fuelpak, SERT, etc.) anda high performance air filter (SE or Nes Big Sucker). I do not know how familiar you are but this is a lot more complicated than I ever thought, I thought you just need new pipes, slap them on a go. I found some Vance and Hines Straight Shot Slip ons on ebay should fit your bike as well.

You have a few things to think about as far as installing your pipes.
1. How they mount to the cylinders
2. How they mount to the framework
3. The shape ... i.e. will the bends cause the pipes to run into other components, like pegs or other framework
4. How the O2 sensors fit.
If I had to guess I'd say all of the engines (regardless of model) are identical with respect to how the exhaust mounts to the cylinders.
I can't see the O2 sensors being much trouble either. I can only assume all the models with EFI would need this ???? Not sure tho.
As far as mounting them to the frame, there is nothing you can't do if you know how to work with metal. You just need to find a shape (bends) that fit your bike. This is where I suspect you will find the most difficulty. The pipes may mount the same, but a shape that fits a softail frame will likely be "out of whack" with your dyna framework. May drop too low, not low enough, bends start too late, it will just look out of place with the other parts.
Like Imentioned at the start of the post... I really don't know ...And may be completely misguided. Hopefully someone with some real knowledge will chime in.
Ray.

Another significant difference between the motors on the FXDB and other 96CID motors is that the FXDB is not a balanced motor ("A"). It brings back the shake rattle and roll that should be in our bikes. The other bikes have a "B" in their designation to indicate it is a balanced motor.
Just make sure you get pipes with two (2) o2 sensors bungs, afree flowing A/C, and most important make sure you get some kind of fuel management system. If money is a factor...wait until you can do all three at once. Doing pipes and A/C without fuel managment mods could cause you some overheating issues.
Pick an exhaust that you like the looks and sound of. Go with it. You are chasing widnmills trying to find the very best set of pipes. Unless you are changing cams, jugs, and injectors it won't make that much difference. Get what you like...not what everyone likes.
Keep reading this forum...these guys have great tips and lots of lessons learned.
Welcome!!!!!!!!!!!
my 5 cents worth....

RE: What Is The Difference In Exhausts And Engines? Please Help...
You guys are great, thank youso much for the knowledge.
My mind is going in the direction of what VenturaChop said, "anything that fits a 06 dyna fits yours". I wasn't aware of this andthat makes it alot easier. I was just looking for exhaust that said 08' fxd. And I found that limiting.
I do really like the look of the Buckshot exhaust made for the Soft Tail so if you guys see anything like that for my DYNA let me know. Thanks again.
