Just dropped the bike at the dealer for 20,000 mile service and asked to check out the IPB. Needs to be replaced. This is the second time. First time was this time last year.
Is bike still under warranty?

And if it is not, will they replace for free?

I may be nitpicking here, but most of the discussion here is about something that "may" or "is supoosed to" happen.

Whatever happened to not fixing it until it breaks?

Go ride and put your worries in the wind.

If it breaks, then worry about it.

Sammi:
Still under warranty. I sure hope it is fixed this time. I do not want to make this a yearly repair. Dealer has not given me any problems. They want it fixed and me happy.

Good deal.

Hate to think it's a yearly ritual, esp after the warranty period.

Many thanks for all the replies.

I agree with the ride it till it breaks mentality. I'd just like to understand what the underlying issue really is / was. I guess it will be well understood at the factory. Market sensitive information I suppose so the rest us will just have to keep guessing - unless anyone out there has some inside information......?

I pretty much agree with ride till it breaks.

My bike's primary bearing went at 5,500 miles. So far the replacement bearing is fine.

Would like to know if this is something I have to plan on taking care of every year or so, and on whose dime.

Thats my view as well Sammi. I'd just like to know if its something I need to expect and factor into the longer termmaintenance of the bike.

If all we are hearing about is the unlucky 10% with failures then no issue. If 100% of bikes have an inherent weakness, I'd rather know about it.

Got my bike back from my 2nd IPB failure. The bike has 17,950 total miles on it. It was in the shop for almost 3 weeks. Dealer called HD about this being the 2nd time in a year. Dealer was told to put 07 parts on my bike. I asked themwhat if this happens again. My factor warranty expires on 12/27. I told them I do not think I should even have to pay the $50 detuctable on the extended warranty. They did not want to commit so I called HD. They agreed that this should not be a re-occurring problem. They said should it happen again it would becase by case if they would cover it. I told them that I do not expect a lifetime warranty on parts, but it should last longer than a year. They agreed. I hope this is now fixed. I am going to try not to worry about it and ride. If it does, I will give the girl at HD a call and take it from there.

scotsport:

I am not sure about the bearing, I will look at my paper work. They did replace the inner primary case and transmission case. I will be away until 2 Jan. I will try to find out about the bearing then. The girl from HD said it was the lastest and greatest. We will see.
