I don't know if I would call it advice but I did some checking on the forum the consensus was pretty much dont bother with either one. The security system I just dont see if someone wants it they'll take it and at home station I'll probably never see it anyway if someone does. The extended warrany is a pretty good deal for $999 but they tell you its for 5 years and really its not its only for 3 since the first 2 years are under the factory warranty but thats a decsion you have to make on your own. I talked to local dealer before I left about it and he told me that if you really have a big problem after the warranty just threaten them a little, more than likely you'll get the parts for free and will only have to pay labor but thats a chance you have to take. The other thingyou need know is that if you deploy again let harley know and they'll extend your warranty for the time that your gone.

Wow...so they freeze your warranty for the length of the deployment?
Also, is the extended warranty just a 3 year tack on from the factory? Or do I receive any special perks. I read that if my bike breaks, H-D will pay for the rental car, lodging, food, etc. Will modifications void the warranty?

Very true about theft. I think insurance will be my strongest security system.

Also, does the extended warranty covered scheduled maintenance (oil changes, etc.)?

Yes from my understanding they'll freeze it for the time your gone but I'm sure theres paperwork involved copy of orders or something. The warranty like I said is just the 3 years tacked onto the factory no perks that I know of but the first 2 include that VIP program from AAFES and modifications wont void the warranty unless they can prove thats what caused the problem. Regular maintenance is on you and its not cheap.

The warranty does not cover wear parts; brakes, tires bulbs, etc. or routine maintenance.
It does buy you peace of mind. There are not a lot of things that can go wrong on a Harley that cost less than $999 to fix at the dealer.

Welcome and congrats on the bike!!
My advice is Just Ride It, and don't do any mods to it for the first 6 months. It will save you a lot of money.

DougJ
Very good advice indeed!

When I initially bought mine I had mods planned into the thousands of dollars, ie: New handle bars, new headlight, break line, chrome inner, wide tire kit etc...

Sure glad I just rode it.Saved me a bundle as I have changed my mind on the mods more than a few times .

Some minor mods that wont break the bank and whichgive large visual returns are
1: lay down liscense plate 20 bucks on ebay.
2: New pegsor higway pegs. 40 bucks each on ebay.
3: Ride it, its a great bike.

Cheers,

Tom

Congrats Perry and good luck with your new bike - only advice is a) ride the bejeesus out of it every chance you get and b) don't even consider changing the risers!
