Arlen Ness I or II
I got the Arlen Ness Big sucker because everyone said it was good. Turns out I just got the stage I. Now, I thought stage I had to do with pipes and filters, not breathability of filters, so I'm confused.
Come Spring I'm boosting my engine up to 107", and want to have it breathing as much as possible. Am I gonna need a new A/C? New "stage II" filter? What's the best breather on the market?

Monk, more displacement, more air. So, you probably want a bigger a/c. You'll probably get as many opinions on which is the best for stage 2 as you get answers. Pick one you like and go with it. Just make sure it's something you can get your leg around on the rare occasion that you use your highway pegs.

I think Zippers sells a deeper filter that works on the Big Sucker and Screamin Eagle air kit. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
If you're not sure if your AC can flow enough cfm for the 107, talk to your builder or whoeveris supplying the parts (namely heads/cams) and see what they recommend.

Hi Monk, i would talk to a good independant tuner. In my own case i did so and i bought the Arlen Ness Big Sucker Billetstage 2, which flows 20% more air than an Arlen Ness stage i kit.Its deeper than stage 1, and the outer diameter is 8" where the stage 1 is 5"-6", IMHO i think it looksbetter than the smaller filter. My tuners advice being the bigger filter will be good now with V&H Shortshots and in the future when i go to longer duration cams(his choice) the bigger filter will be able to give the extra air flow needed. You can see them both on the Arlen Ness website or in the catalogs such as Custom Chrome or Zodiac. All the best with your choice.

Stage 1 is 5" diameter and sufficient for pipe changes. The Stage II is 8" diameter and intended to allow more air flow for more radical changes such as cams, porting and so on. Like it was stated above, more diplacement means more air is needed, hence the larger filter on the Stage II.

with the Arlen-Ness, both the stage-I and the stage-II use an 8" filter.
the filter for the stage-II is deeper and not tapered like the stage-I filter is.
the backing plate is identical for both kits, so you can allways buy a stage-II filter andreplace your stage-I filter.
however, as far as i read (on Ness tech forum and other places) the stage-I will be sufficient even for the 107" kit.
they reccomend the stage-II for big inch builds. 124" and such.
