Well, I've tried a lot of different oils and Formula+ seemed to work best in the tranny and primary. Interesting that you should mention M1 because I just bought some 20-50 v-twin for my next engine oil change to see how it goes. I'm currently running all dino oils, but here in South Texas it gets so hot in summer that although my engine seems to be quieter with dino oil, its supposed lack of heat resistance makes me nervous.
Some folks recommend a good 10-40 in the primary, and that's something I have never tried. I guess they mean any dino 10-40 oil like Quaker State, Castrol, Valvoline, etc. The only synthetic that has worked OK in my primary was Syn3, but Formula+ is cheaper and seems to work great. Syn3 definately made the tranny very noisy, so that little experiment got dumped quickly.

20W-50 (my understanding) is a little heavy for the primary, and can cause the clutch to grap.
I stay away from Syn3........... Seems to make everything noisier.
Sythetics should make your engine run much cooler, especially in those Texas summers.

Maybe I'll give a regular 10-40 a try in the primary - can't hurt. Yeah, Syn3 made my motor and tranny much noisier. The motor had a lot more valvetrain noise and shifting was very loud. Smooth, but loud. I'll let you know how the M1 works out in the motor - hoping it quiets things down a bit. Of course my windsheild makes engine noises echo up and sound worse that they probably are...
Found the M1 v-twin 20-50 at an Autozone for $8.95 - is this about average?

Has anyone out there had trouble using Amsoil 20-50 in their primary , my clutch feels like it could be sliping just a bit when I start out
Is there a better choice in fluids for the primary , I know that when I put Amsoil Severe Gear in the tranny the 5th gear noise was completely gone and still is nice and quiet after 4000 miles.
thanks all

Developed with a proprietary mineral basestock formula, TESTED-CERTIFIED by Harley-Davidson® Motor Company. Formulated to provide lubricity for the anti-wear requirements of transmission gears. Formulated to maintain the coefficient of friction for proper clutch operation and provide adequate lubrication to the primary chain. Approved for use in all stages of transmission and primary chaincase life. Not for use in the crankcase as a motor oil.

I hear more engine chatter with it on, too.
That is what I am paying for M1 V-twin.
Note, your oil will turn pretty black, butstill be plenty slippery. My understanding is the extra "moly" additive Mobil puts in causes that.

I had the bike in for the 5000 mi check-up with no fluids (I added the Amsoil myself) the dealer did the adjustment to the clutch at that time and said it was way out of adjustment ( I made the adjustment per the service manual and i thought I had it right on) however it feels like it has some slippage to it now, I think that I will use the Harley primary oil the next time
Thanks

If you read the manual it tells you to only adjust the clutch on a room temperature bike. If you adjust it on a hot bike it could be loose when the powertrain is cold. We change our oil when the bike is warm so it drains faster so you really shouldn't perform both operations at the same time.

a real touchy adjustment.
I think shoptroll probably hit on a real important pointer (hot vs cold).

RE: Sliping Clutch what oil do you use
Seems to me that "engine" oil would not be too good for a clutch assembly as the oil has friction modifiers in it to help make it slippery under pressure. That to me says not too good for something that is not supposed to slip that much.
But then who am I? I just ride 'em. I don't work on 'em.
