Default engine chrome question??

i see derby covers, side transmission covers, timer covers and i am wondering how many of these chrome accessories can be done with out losing oil and messing up anything...i am somewhat mechanically inclined, i just dont know engines very well....and i dont want to take a cover off and lose a bunch of oil or screw anything up....(now that i think about it, the service manual would probably helpanswer my questions)...thanks for the help...

Cam cover have to drain oil, derby cover put kick on 2x6 or bike on jack no need to drain primary, timer cover nothing behind it but air space in cam cover, no need to drain oil. Side trans cover, have to drain tranny first.
