The tires should have wear bars on them in certain locations (check the owners manual). I use the depth gauge on the Harley tire guage; when it's in the yellow, I order tires. I have worn out some Dunlap tires in 7K, so you may need some. I replace front and rear at the same time.

Hard to explain, but I'll try. Around the edge/side wall of the tire, there are very small arrows pointing to the tread.. Were thearrow points, there is a bar/tread, if the tread is not visible, time for a new tire. You mileage isn't too bad, you'll never get the same kind of mileage out of a bike tire as a car tire. Unless it's a 'performance' tire, with a softer compound. Something like the 'gatorbacks' tires on a Camaro or 'Vette, Mustang, etc.

When your bike starts sliding easily on wet roads or black top with only a small amount of sand or dirt on it. (when braking) You need new tires..................Dosn't matter what the tread looks like.

I've recently read posts where people are getting between 6500 and 7500 miles on the rear stock dunlops. I'm approaching 6k and seem to be fine. 2 of my buddies just got new tires and both of them were right at 10K. One of them probably needed one at 9k though.
