Layers!
I have ridden in 16* temps with my only issue being my fingertips.
Fleece and Thinsulate below a wind break. I like heavy leather as long as it's dry.
Fleece neck sock and or mask.
I sill haven't found the right combination of gloves yet but my main problem there has been that,
no matter how heavy they are, they just don't stop the wind from getting through.

My idea is to get some "Lunch Lady" gloves and wear them in between a light pair of brown jersey gloves and a heavier glove or my gauntlets.

I think that could be Pattent-able so forget I ever told you.

Second on the salt and sand, be careful out there when sand is down. The salt will eat at the aluminum, when the pitting shows up it's too late. Any nicks in the paint and the metal will rust. Wash, wash, wash.

I feel a little guilty but 30's are few and far between where I live. Full face helment and a jacket and I'm good to go. We ride as much in Jan as we do in Aug.

Ok I live near a Cycle Gear store and I'm gonna try and go tomorrow to get these Antifreeze inner gloves to wear under my Harley leather ones.

http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1...S_G&tier2=3203

They are supposed to be water and wind proof and is layered and the best thing is the price is right at $29.99. Worth a shot. If it doesn't work then I'll probably check out those Alpinestar gloves next.
To be continued...

How about visiting a ski shop for ideas ? I would check out what the extreme downhill skier is wearing these days, especially for hand warmth. Those psychos can survive in the Arctic.

I don't know of any ski shops around the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

From a ski shop: Reusch gloves. Warm, leather, dexterous, durable, expensive.

Personally I love riding but HATE freezing. Once the temps go below 45 (Below freezing wind chill on the highway) my bike goes to sleep for the winter. Besides freezing I don't like spending 10 minutes dressing and undressing just to ride. For me it's simply no fun if i'm going to freeze. I don't have to ride for transportation ... I ride to enjoy myself. I don't enjoy ICE forming on my genitals!
;-) ................ That's why I fully intend to be a "snow bird" when I retire in 5 years! THEN I'll ride all winter because winter in southern FLA. is WARM! :-) You guys in the south don't know how good you have it!!

Good luck to you northern guys who refuse to stop riding. Be safe on those slippery roads!!
