RE: Kuryakyn forward controls problem - Help?!!!
The screwing goes on,but now with lube.
Eastern told me on Tuesday that they were shipping the new shaft that day via UPS. UPS takes two days for delivery (from there to here), so it should have been here yesterday. After waiting around all day yesterday and half of today (because Eastern always sends stuff with a signature required, so it can't be dropped off unless I'm home), I called Eastern to find out WTF. "Oh, we sent that by mail." ---sigh
Sure enough, it showed up in the mail today. Not what I was promised, but fair enough.
So I go grab the Kuryakyn lever to try it out.and itDOESN'T FIT the new Kury shaft either!
Fortunately the stock shifter (that I pried open towell beyondit's original size trying to get it on the other shaft) now does, though it's still a tight fit and I'll never get the original bolt back through it.
So it looks like I can at least make the collection of parts work, but I'm out the cost of the Kuryakyn lever and stuck with a cob job. Good enough after this long. I'll go buy a bolt and try to forget the whole fiasco.
And no, I'm not selling the left over shifter to anybody (because I just wouldn't feel right about it) and I certainly couldn't recommend anyone buy one elsewhere either. But... if you're just a glutton for punishment, or think you're a lot luckier guy than I am, the part # is _1025"Girder Shift Lever". One warning, however.... that particular lever does not have a through-bolt where it clamps on. It threads into the other side and the hole is a dead end. If you had to pry it open at all to get it to fit, it would never be able to thread and clamp down properly (unless you drilled it out, maybe).
Now I'm going to go put my bike back together, then sit and stare glumly at the rain that has now arrived after being lovely weather for most of the past week. [:'(]

Glad you can at least make it work now.
I'm not begging the lever from you, I'll just keep what I have. Especially since I found it the other day in the catalog and found it it costs 80 bucks. Just curious why you wouldn't feel right about selling it? I'd put that sucker on ebay and try to get some of my money back out of the deal.
I find it hard to believe that lever won't fit when they say right in the catalog that it fits all Kuryakyn forward controls for Big Twins as well as stock Big Twins. But if you've now had 2 shafts and it still won't fit, then it obviously doesn't. Really makes no sense - this has bound to have been brought to there attention before or either you've gotten 2 consecutive bum parts which is not likely.
I hear you on the rain. Rolled in here yesterday and threatening again today. But we need it bad. Supposed to be 2 nice weekned days though (not rubbing it in).

Well, it's on there.
But man what a tight fit, still. Even spreading the old stock lever out (and I spread the slot at least3/16" - damn thing'soval now instead of round), I still had to break out the hammer and a block of wood to get it all the way on.Here's hopingeverything holds together now.
Still, no more messing with it (forthe time being,at least),we're supposed to have a nice weekend, and it looks like the sun might justbe peaking through the clouds out there right now, so... Whoo Hoo!

I just don't need the headache.
BTW, Eastern's price on the lever was only $60. Maybe they're factory seconds, that would explain a lot.

But it could rain at night, or when I'm stuck inside anyway, or something.
To everyone...
Thanks for letting me vent and for showing your support. It's been a big help, really, just in keeping me from going completely off my rails. You guys are great.

Something just doesn't seem right if you had to spread it that far and it still is very tight. I would say something is different about your bike but the Kury lever didn't fit either. It's a puzzle and very strange.
My stock lever went on without stretching at all and I didn't have to use a hammer either. Of course, I couldn't get the factory pinch bolt back in it but it was close - it just wouldn't quite catch the threads on the other side. I remember intending to call Kuryakyn about it but forgot about it once I rode with the forwards and never noticing the alternate method I used for securing the shift lever.

Everything is plated. The shaft, splines, inside of the lever... everything. I figure I'm running into quality control issues with the thickness. Especially when the levers fit differently at different points on the shaft. The stock lever started out easy as can be, sliding right on. By halfwayon, itwas good and snug and I was hitting it with my palm to get any further, and the last 1/8" or so I had to pound on it. Also interesting is, when I first tried the Kury lever and it didn't fit, I turned it over backwards and itwould start to slide on for about 1/8" and then stop.
If the chrome thickness isn't even consistent for the length the splines on the shaft, then fitmentwould pretty much be a crapshoot. That's what I think it is anyway.
I think I ran into the same thing on the pegs, where they attached to the mounts. It didn't cause a problem there, but one sideslid inpretty snug and the other side could practically rattle around.

Maybe that's why EP's prices are so good - they are selling QA rejects. But, that's Kuryakyn's fault for letting something like that leave their warehouses. I was recently looking at some V&H pipes they are selling for over $100 less than retail and shipping for free and they explicitely say that they are not seconds. Makes you wonder though... Why would Kuryakyn let them sell so much product and undercut the market like that.
