Default Dyna Oil Consumption?

A friend of mine and I both have 2005 dyna's. My question is a few months agoafter getting my bike serviced at the dealer, I put about 2000 miles on and my oil level wasn't even shownig on the dip stick. I thought maybe the dealer didn't put enough oil in. So I changed it, and there is no way it had the required amount. This time I made sure everything was filled to proper levels with amsoil and put about another 2000 miles on and the oil was down close to half on the dip stick. My bike only has 5800 miles on and it is not leaking or burning oil. My friends bike is the same year and he has about 15,000 miles on his and is having the same problem! I caught mine alot quicker then he did....his just went to the shop today...Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem? Damn, brand new Harleys shouldn't be using oil like this! Plus...my oil light NEVER came on.....and it does work. Is there a way to get it to come on ALOT quicker when the level goes down?

Take a look at your spark plugs for any clues as to where the oil is going. Mine has been using about a quart per 1,000 miles and my front spark plug gets covered in pretty nasty stuff. I'm guessing that I'm getting oil in the combustion chamber somehow (probably through the valve seals, from what I can gather). I need to take it to a mech to look at it, but I haven't wanted to take the time to do so just yet.

FWIW, my 02 BMW R1150R burned about this much oil as well so HD is not alone in having this kind of issue.

the 05's and some early 06'shad an issue with the valve guide seals. the seals (p/n 18094-02) used a one piece valve seal and lower spring seat design, this sealcan cause oil leakage between the guide and seal when side loaded or mis-installed. the new guide seal is p/n 18094-02A. the dealer will diagnose the oil consumption problem and most dealershave replaced the "bad" seals usually under warranty. the heads will have to come off for this work, had my 05 done in the summer of 06, seems to have cured mine. good luck and ride safe.

Have a 05 WG and it had the valve seal issue. Didn't really notice an oil consumption but it started to run rough and so I put her up and checked the plugs. Front plug was a mess. Took the plugs in and the mechanic took one look and said valve seals. Luckily, it was under warranty...been running awesome since.
