Default Refilling the primary

I tried to do the firstoil change on my new 1999 FXDL without the service manual (I have one on order, but am in Japan, and I got impatient). To make a long story short, I mistakenly drained the primary lubricant, instead of the engin oil. How do I re-fill it, and what is the recommended lubricant?

HD formula + Transmission and Primary Chaincase Lubricant.

Fill through the primary cover. You need a T-27 Torx bit to remove the 5 primary cover screws. Make a make-shift funnel out of a piece of thin cardboard to make it easier to pour in the oil without making a mess. Fill until you can see the oil level at the bottom of the clutch assembly with the bike upright and level.

Don't know on the 99, but on the 07 it calls for 32oz of 20w-50 oil in the primary. Git a funnel with a long flex neck so you can pour it in without a problem . Sometimes there's not a lot of room in the clutch basket to pour it in if yer not good. You might try leaning yer bike a little the other way too by puttin something under yer kick stand.
Did you check the gasket on the drain plug for any metal and if the o ring is still good ?

On the '99 don't you just pour it in the oval inspection cover? (we don't have these on the '06+)

You'd think after as long as I been riding I would remember about the instpecion cover . I've done got so adjusted to the new twin cam everything to me is 07. No inspection cover. NO choke, no on off for the fuel. Man I'm spoiled now.
Just keep forgitting about the older bikes.

Thanks for straightening me out. Dang Blood pressure medicine.

Use a toilet paper tube squished at one end to fit past the clutch basket. They make great round to flat funnel.
