Mike: Your best is 37MPG? On the highway in top gear?? That's definitely on the low side for a stage 1 (a/c pipe & jet kit).

Assuming it doesn't need a tune up - My 1st suggestion would be to try to get in touch with the previous owner to see if your bike has had more extensive mods (big bore kit, high lift cam, etc). If it's a Harley big bore kit you should be able to see 95 on the cylinder casting near the heads - and maybe even Screaming Eagle 95.

Another suggestion would be to take it to a reputable tuner and have it dynoed and possibly re-jetted.

Joe

Beleive it or not that was in 5th gear(top gear). Its going to the shop this weekend. Just rode all weekend and mpg is down to 31.
I checked and it dont have the big bore kit. Previous owner unknown to me, and harley shop I purchased from cant/wont help me.
So1 1/2 hour trip to another shop before trip to Arkansas. Thanks to all that have responded.
was first time on here and very impressed with knowledge here..

What can be done to improve fuel mileage. I am getting 32-35 mpg depends on how I ride that day.
I bought this bike used and dont know if carb was jetted or not.I am running SE pipes with K&N filter.
Any thoughts would be helpful..............
Mike
Around town, mostly secondary roads 35-45mph to/from work I get the same stock. Lots of BS artists around here. Get around 40-42 on the highway

Check your plugs. Was getting40 hwy, now up to about 44.5 with the windshield on. Plugs were pretty gunked up, probably running too rich or previous owner was enrichener happy. BTW, my enrichener actually says "Choke"????

the pipe/carb combo seemed to help out alot.did the shop add a high flow air cleaner?those help too.gas mileage also depends on riding style .if You have an agressive riding style,You're naturally going to get less mileage. My '03 FXD has a Yost power tube in the carb along with a SE air cleaner kit and hollowed out stock mufflers.I'm getting around 38mpg city 50mpg highway
