Thanks gents. Found a few videos of the lifters being primed with an oil gun a needle tip.

Got a lot of research to run yet and a horrid mess in the garage to clean up before teardown.

Max, that thread you linked was very cool, thanks. Nice to see a professional shop, tools and tech work. Fall is beautiful here in the mid-Atlantic, you really need to think on assembling my motor…

While we on lifters, a lash question. Zippers recommends bottoming the lifter then going four flats back. Never done any of my lifters this way and it seems odd to me.

I might say "professional like shop" as I'm not a pro.. Was a paid MC mechanic back in the 70s but got out of MC pro work to get into electronics. My problem is that I work too slow. As a hobby, I can take my time..

Running 4 flats off bottom works pretty well.. It will quiet a most cams that have noise issues.. The real noisey ones like the Woods 9B work really well at 1 or 2 flats with travel limiters. WFO Larry helped me with this..

IMO the main problem with lifter noise is the lifters collapsing.. Once collapsed they can't recover fast enough.

Once in awhile I work with my buddy who is semi retired harley indie. Its amazing even for older guy, just non stop, no breaks, go go go. I like to read the manual a few times, then google it, which then involves sitting down for an hour.

I’ve found a local retired machinist, Hopkins Machine and Don is cool and does great work, probably because he’s never in a hurry.

Im with you on the googling, as my buddy like’s to say “ I could perform surgery on my kids with YouTube”. It is so much easier now to check parts, dyno’s and builds.

Back in my day… you had to intern for free, parts washing, gasket scraping, tire changes and that kind of stuff just for some education. Lots of patient men dealing with my nonsense questions, not much has changed.
