Default Dyna questions

Looking for some input and ideas on the different Dynas. Took the woman out to look at bikes that pick her interest(shes got the itch and wants a bike of her own once she learns to ride), and the dealer had an 07 FXDWG that made her drool. Shes about all but sold on wanting a wideglide now, likes the clean look vs baggers like mine, lol. I never rode one, so I cant even give any ideas on how they ride, comfort, what years are good ones, vs bad ones, or any really great dynas that may have been sent to pasture in the past. So can some of you give some info on how they are on longer trips, and burnin down the town, comfort and handling, and upgrades that are must haves. Only other bike that would be close is a softail custom, but she didnt even really care for those.

Need to know how tall the person is ,and if the Fxwg can be picked up easy by the person riding it.. The fxwg is a fine bike.

Well sounds like she is sold on the wideglide,,, and nothing wrong with that... I personally am a smaller male type person, shorter and lower weight so I went with the bob. The Dynas appear to be a beefier bike, but are incredable in balance and handle super well.. Cardboard points it out... she needs to fit the bike to her size. I personally was not comfortable on a bigger bike.and not on a sporter ( to high)no matter how much I drooled over other models........ Ive known many, buy bikes based on just looks.... and it was not a happy marriage. Just a couple of cents.

The good thing about Dynas is that any one of them can be made to feel like another one. I say that because, the only thing I personally recommend a new rider learn on is mid controls. Once they have spent some time in the saddle, then they can do whatever they want. Therefore, if the WG has to be the bike, then get a set of mid controls of ebay or someplace and start that way. The raked front end of the WG also does not handle as easily or well at low speed as the other Dynas. The seat on the WG is also almost 2" higher than on some other Dynas, which may not matter if she is tall.

If a new female rider asked for my recommendation ...and she liked the chromed out look ... I would recommend a Low Rider. It has mid controls, is lower, and handles easily. The bars and controls can be changed later ... after she gains some experience.

Wilerty has a good point the front end on the wide glide is a little heavier ,and when slow in sand or something soft it can slide with the extra weight..
On the older wide glides I see a lot of women riding them. The older bikes has a 16" rear wheel and sits closer to the ground. But I see a lot of women riding a new wide glide.
Ask a salesman how the bike fits her. How she can handle it . You can change the seat and shocks. The 07 model has a lot of ground clearance for people that are taller.
I'd git the lady to take the MSF course and she might be able to underestand more and make a better decesion.

I just got the FXDL. Bought it used in Milwaukee and rode it back to Billings. Has the quick detach windshield and it was a dream ride all the way to Sturgis on the stock seat. Stopped at the Mustang Seat tent and rode home on the Mustang Solo Studded Narrow seat. Fits me to a T. I'm 5'9" tall, 179 # and 62 years old. It's a great bike. My daughter is 5'2", 125# and it fits her perfectly. Has mid controls and highway pegs with stirrups - very good combo.
May be selling it. Have had this massive Road King Classic urge that won't go away even though the Dyna Low is both a good cruiser and great street machine. Feel free to PM me if you would like to see more pics. Just added saddlebags this weekend.

Shes 5'11', so not hurting on the height thing. I already told her she will be taking a safety course as well, cant agree with you guys on that more. Never realized that fwd controls would be harder on a new rider, glad to know this. Shes prolly got all winter to think, save money, and practice on one of my beater hondas when the weather permits. Thanks for the info, it brought up some things I didnt think of. Add anything else that comes to mind by all means!

If she's 5' 11" tall, the wide glide will probally fit her pretty good.
I'm 5'10" and weight 194 lbs. I chose the wide glide cause the other bikes gits my hips in a cramp. I understand why she likes it. It also gives you a little more leg room.
I think with a little practise she will like the forward controls. They just take a little gettin used to.
As long as she learns the bike she will like the heck out of it. After she takes the course, they rent wide glides at the dealer. Let her rent one and take if for a ride on the weekend. She can deceide for herself

In my biased opinion, she can't go wrong with any of the dyna's. Never rode a wideglide but I never met anyone with one that didn't like the way they ride either. I can tell you this about a dyna - I never rode anything on 2 wheels but dirtbikes offroad until I bought my super glide almost a year ago. Yet, it only took me a couple of minutes to ride from the dealer's parking long about a mile down a back road and back before I felt comfortable enough to ride my new bike home, about an hour away. My bike came with mid-controls so I installed highway pegs at the beginning. Wasn't long, though, before I wanted the forwards and got them. Then again, I'm 6'4" so I almost had to have them.
