I was told the same thing, but I paid 1400$ for the prepaid unlimited service in 2005. With another year to go and 17750 miles on it already its ready for the next 2500 service and I came out way ahead. Plus they pick up and deliver to my house 50 miles away.

If he's using dealer for services then 1400.00 for 28 services is a real good deal. Here in Texas Dallas/Ft Worth area they are getting anywhere from 190.00 to over 300.00 for complete service which is just HD way of ripping people off again after charging them and arm and a leg for the bike in the first place

They gave me the same sales pitch. I kinda thought it was a rip off. If you've already brought it in for the 1k then it's only 1500 more miles when you hit the 2500 mile mark. Do it yourself at 2.5k and save that cash for something else or if you're running synthetic wait till the 5k mark.

New technology motors, don't need much - just fresh oil and clean filters. Change your own and save money. Same with other maintenance, like changing the plugs, air filter etc, ez to do and your paynig BIG $ for a stealer to do it and some 22 year old that barely has a clue is servicing your bike. The certified mechanics are busy with bigger more complex jobs like top end rebuilds etc or something that has a liability issue like tire changing. If you think some special Maytag repairman look alike HD mechanic is servicing your bike at 1K and thoroughly checking every nut and bolt, spoke and nipplethink again it is the one of the shop boys under training...

I don't know about your service guys, but the ones here are all the same ... trained. I've talked to guys that have been riding HD for 35+ years and they all say the same thing, change the oil every 3,000 miles. It's just like your car the owner's manual says every 5,000 miles, but that's under "perfect" driving conditions. Face it; we didn't buy these babies to drive them in "perfect" conditions. We bought them to ride, whenever - wherever. It's a little added insurance and don't you think it's worth it?

I also opted for the service plan. Its good until 35-45k or something. They pick it up and drop it off. Now that I think about it, I have NO clue why I paid the extra$$$. I am mechanically inclined and like working on my own toys. I really don't know why I did it.

My 2004 Super Glide has the same maintenance interval listed in it's manual too. 1K, 5K then every 5K after that. I switched to Synth3 oil at the 1K service and have done a 5K & 10K so far. I have just over 14,000 miles so the 15K is coming soon. So far it has performed flawlessly. My dealer recommended the 2.5K intervals but HD says 5K so thats what I do. I think the dealer just likes expensive vacations.
