I have the Dyna Clunk also comfing from the forks. I told my stealer about it when I took it in for the 1000 mile service and they checked all the bolts of the front end to make sure wass all tight and said it was normal for a Dyna. I don't notice it much anymore...I must be gettting used to it.... Don't worry..It's normal...

Mine clunks like a bitch, but my indy did confirm it was my stearing head bearing.
Said they should have adjusted it at my 1k
and I looked at my manual and it is part of the service.
Now I gotta take it back at some point to have the idiots
do what they were supposed to do in the first place.
Jay, why would you return for another forkin??

Do it yourself??

Or, your indy??

mud
I was only going to take it to them cause they were supposed to do it in the first place and didn't. I didn't pay for my 1k other than extra for the synth oil.The way I see it is, whether Ipaid for it or not, they should have done what was specified in the 1k service. If they decide not to, then the Moco will get a call from me. I guess it's partly my fault for not addressing it when I took it in the first time but my ignorance is not an excuse for them to avoid doing what is part of the service.

Took the bike in last Sunday - got it back on Wed night. It's been raining so I haven't had a chance to ride it much. They adjusted the steering headbearing and like others have said, the nut on top was finger tight. The biggest problem was a crack in the front motor mount which was causing all the extra vibration.

Thanks for all the responses.

Realizing that this is a dead thread, Harley Davidson has resolved this issue by increasing the torque value on the head bearing. I had the same problem on my 05 Softail FXST. For those of you who find this thread in the future and have the head bearing clunk it is not "normal" for the bike to do that. All dealerships now at this point should be up to date on the latest Harley standards.

Actually, there is a replacement washer along with increased torque values to resolve the 'clunk'. Searching on 'clunk' will yield a threads titled "maintenance bulletin M-xxxx" and it will have that info (part number, etc) in there.

Based upon the discussions on "the steering head clunck" I have added the instruction sheet for p/n 45740-07 "STEERING HEAD WASHER KIT" to the ***H-D instruction sheets database*** some time ago.

This kit contains the new hardened washer (see attachment figure 2) p/n 45727-08 and is used at:

All 2006-2007 Dyna and 2008 and earlier FXDWG Models
All 2008 and earlier FX Softails (except FX Springer Models)

Torq specs are in the instruction sheet.
