I can’t get one of the fender strut bolts loose on my 2003 Wide Glide. It’s the rear bolt near the turn signal. The bolt goes through the fender and strut. It screws into a brass threaded insert moulded into the plastic license plate holder (example shown below). The brass inset "nut" has broken free of the plastic housing assembly, so the bolt and insert spin freely. I soaked the bolt with PB Blaster but this didn’t help. Any suggestions?
Have you tried an impact wrench? The hammering effect of the impact wrench can loosen loosely held fasteners where hand tools would cause it just to spin.
Are you trying to save anything? If you heat it the brass will expand faster than the bolt and it will get loose, or, cut the brass piece with a cutoff wheel in a Dremmel tool.
Problem solved.... I wedged a screwdriver between and inner side of the fender and plastic plate holder, gripped the edge of the brass nut with needle nose pliers and then removed the bolt. Thanks for your help!
