Default How do I change the oil pan on 98 FDXL

I had my oil changed and they stripped out my oil plug. I tried to use a self threading screw and that didn't work so I figured I willreplace the oil pan myself if I can get some info. Is this adifficult?

First off, whoever "they" are, who did this, should be fixing the problem - they would in my world. Second, you have options other than switching the pan. You should be able to, with a little work, figure out how to put a slightly larger plug in (will require enlarging the plug hole slightly and tapping new threads) orusing a Helicoil (see this page - http://www.emhart.com/products/helic...iex/design.asp).

If neither of these options work for you then buy a service manual - the best money you can spend - it will detail how to replace the pan or get you 99% of the way there.

I have tried to put alarger plug in and it still leaked. I have ordered the oil pan and would rather fix it right. A friend told me I might have to take the motor off.

Well, if your hearts set on a new oil pan the first thing on your shopping list needs to bethe service manual - no if's, and's or but's. It will have all the answers to all the questions you will have. Oh, and don't forget the gaskets you will need, torque wrench, etc.

BTW - why aren't you going back to the people who stripped you threads???

Because it was a few oil changes ago and I have already tried to fix it myself. I don't think they (Jim Cycle Shop in Axtel, Texas) will stand good for it. I really haven't asked and I have already bought the oil pan. I will get a manual and do I myself if it isn't to difficult. Thanks for you help.
