Very good point. In the old days Harley had one frame for all the Big Twins, so they basically only had two lines, the Sportsters on one frame and the Big Twins on the other, so the baggers as well as the stripped down models like the Superglide all were built on the same frame. For instance, that 1980 Wideglide pictured above was built on the same frame as a 1980 Electra Glide. In the early '80's they changed that with one frame for the baggers, the FXR frame for the bikes like the Superglide and the Lowrider, and the introduction of the softail frame.
In the early '90's they replaced the FXR frame with the Dyna frame. The Dyna was cheaper to produce than the FXR plus lots of the Harley customer base said that the FXR looked "too Japanese."
