Dyna vs Sportster
#21
Hello, handirifle. I used to ride an 86 Ironhead 1000cc Sporty. Sold it over 20 years ago...it was part of me, lol. Last August, at age 64, I bought an '02 FXDL with 14k miles on it. I'm only 5'9" and I lowered the rear an inch and i can EASILY put my feet flat on the ground with knees bent. I'll share a pic of when I first got it...it had nice bags on it and a comfy Mustang 2 up seat. This is all just FYI, my friend.

my wife had a 08 1200 custom anniversary sportster, there was nothing cheap or plastic on it. It was a pretty nice little bike, but it wanted to be ridden kinda hard. there was no cruising on it,once she rode my 13 fxdc superglide there was no turning back. it worked for me because I traded her sporty in on a new 14 street glide !! so if you want to rip around town get a sporty, if you want to rip around town and cruise comfortable get a dyna....jmo

I can't speak for newer ones, but there is nothing cheap or plasticy about my '07. In fact its my understanding, the evo sportster engine is the most trouble free in the HD lineup. I have ridden a lot of bikes, and seen ridden and sat on a lot of HD's and the quality of build is no different from a sportster to an Ultra. The bigger bikes have a bigger engine and frame, but quality never seems any different to me.
To each their own on that one.

Agreed. Sportys are just lighter, smaller engined Harley Davidsons. Period. My old Sportster never ever left me stranded. Not even once.

I own both a sportster and a dyna and ride both. The dyna does feel like a larger sportster to me and that was the main selling factor to me as I loved the sportster handling. While the dyna is noticeably heavier, it carries the weight very well. My sportster is solid mount, so my sportster does have more vibration but the dyna is not lacking in the vibration department in any way. While the dyna is a different bike, I feel that if you like the sportster, you will love the dyna. Everything that is good about the sportster is as good or better on the dyna with the exception being fuel economy and physical size. The negative aspects of physical size only comes into play finding room in the garage and moving it in-between cars....never on the road. I love both bikes, but admittingly I find myself in the seat of the dyna way more often.
For comparison I am ~6'3" and have no issue fitting on either bike, although I have modified both for my size. I also ride v-twin sport bikes and the difference in power delivery between the two harley engines is very subtle in comparison.

Have you seen the Sport Glide? It appears to be the current year softail version of the Dyna Switchback but with a detachable fairing instead of windshield and slightly larger bags.
