If I can add one more thing....if you don't mind taking off the front tire, it makes the job go much quicker and you get a much deeper shine if you follow these steps......
Remove the front tire (with bike on a lift, of course),
Do the sanding exactly as decribed,
The final 2000 grit can be done semi aggressively with just a bit of cutting compound in with the water,
Do an initial pass with straight metal polish,
Take a multi speed buffer and a wool or course foam pad and the metal polish and bring back the shine this way instead of doing it totally by hand.
This process will save your hands, wrists, patience level and leave more for drinking time!! It also produces one hell of a shine. Plus if the tire is off, you can rotate the sliders as you sand and polish all around them....
