Fork oil amount

Fork oil amount
Don't usually comment that much, but want to clear up some WRONG information on correct amount of fork oil in EXTENDED fork tubes. Over 45 years of building and riding has proven that the correct amount of oil in EXTENDED fork tubes is indeed same as factory spec. KEEP LEVEL FROM TOP OF TUBE SAME AS FACTORY ! IF YOU ONLY EXTEND TUBES, WITH ADDITIONAL SPACER ON TOP OF EXISTING INTERNALS, THEN MEASUREMENT IS THE SAME. AMOUNT MEANS NOTHING,AIR SPACE MUST REMAIN STOCK FOR FRONT END TO FUNCTION AS INTENDED. Too many read Way too much engineering in this. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE ,just simple fluid mechanics. Sorry, but had to get this off my chest. I've ALLWAYS, and my older experienced builders as well, have adhered to this,IT WORKS.

So perhaps because the amount of oil has to increase to achieve the same factory Oil Level from Top measurement, then ...
"the correct amount of oil in EXTENDED fork tubes is the increased amount needed to maintain the same factory oil level measurement spec."

Just a point of clarification ... that statement above may be confusing for others reading because it seems to contradict the rest of the statements, although that wasn't your intent.

It's all about the air/oil gap with damper rod forks. It's a fool's errand to use a liquid measurement to refill fork legs; a distance measurement from the top is the only way to go in my book. Indeed it isn't rocket science but many folks here can make it seem that way when trying to help someone.

From my manual:NOTE
Fork oil amounts can be measured two ways. Refer to
Table 2-17.
Fork oil amounts can be measured two ways. Refer to
Table 2-17.
- Use oz/cc measurement if fork is left in frame.
- Use in/mm measurement if fork is disassembled. In this case, oil level is measured from top of fork tube, with spring removed and fork fully compressed.

been asked to repost this here. from 04 2012.......

below is my Oil Level DipStick
for my 006 WG fork pipes, level is 110 mm, measured down from the top of the pipe.
If you prefer the HD Gauge, I believe you can pick it up for around 60 bux....
.
.
.
stroke the assembly slowly from fully collapsed to fully extended,
look in with a flashlight and you will see the air evacuation.
takes about 8-10 slow strokes...
now hang the DipStick on and measure the level
006 WG fork pipes, level is 110 mm (approx 29 oz)
all other 006 Dyna pipes, level is 112 mm (approx 26 oz)
Absolute precision on that measurement
is not as critical as getting each of the pipe levels equal.

,,,, minus the HD on the box, considerably cheaper.
Not knocking your method though. Its certainly more practical. With the doodad, I just overfill the forks a tad, adjust the doodad to the right depth, then stick it in the fork and suck out the excess. You can't suck out too much,,,,, not possible.
