Default Is anyone running a smaller front compensator sprocket?

I'm in the process of hot rodding my 02 Low Rider and was talking with a guy that used to build some bulletproof 95" motors and he advised me to run a smaller compensator sprocket like Screamin' Eagle used to offer. The one from the Screamin' Eagle catalog is obsolete now, but I figured out that the sprocket from the kit is a 21 tooth sprocket versus the stock 25 tooth. Has anyone done this? doesn't it really make much of a difference? I did some research and it does change the gearing quite a bit but I haven't heard many people going this route. If anyone has any input I'm all ears. Thanks in advance guys!

That would definitely be an amazing step up in torque, same reason why drag racers will used a 4.10:1 over a 3.55:1 rear end gear. I would imagine the RPM cruising down the highway will be greatly increased (if that matters to you) I have re-geared many trucks and cars and I can tell you the difference it made in those was absolutely substantial in power from low end to high end, it just makes the engine not have to work as hard to accelerate the bike. might be worth a shot if you don't mind gas mileage decreasing and over all top speed decreasing. just my $.02 ride safe!

Edit: nice looking bike BTW!

I'm no guru but on my 03 Dyna for my riding style the stock gearing was WAY too low. I basically didn't need 1st gear at all and that was with a stock 88" motor. When I installed a Baker OD6 tranny I went with a one tooth larger tranny pulley to raise the overall gearing. I love it now. With stock gearing I hit 5th gear at 45 mph. That don't leave much headroom with 70 mph speed limits.

I guess what I am getting at is do some serious RPM calculations vs. speed before you lower the gearing on that bike (at least from my experience). If it is just going to be a bar hopper then it may not matter to you, but if you want to actually go places on it lower than stock gearing on that bike might be a pain. Also keep in mind that the cam chain tensioners wear out quickly on those models. If you are increasing the rpms then it may increase wear.

Like I said I am not an expert but these are things that I have dealt with on my 03. My cam chain tensioners split in half at 39,000 miles and I do not ride hard at all.

Like said above, when you change one, it will effect the RPM's throughout the entire range. We offer a RPM ratio calculator on our site that you may want to play with to find what you are looking for.

Also, depending on what you are looking to accomplish, we do have 2 different ratios on our OD6 that might get you what you are looking for.

Each tooth you go down will increase your torque by 3.5% but will also increase your RPMs by the same amount. I would just drop one tooth to start with and see what you think.

OR blend both recommendations. Drop one tooth on the sprocket and go with an OD6 for highway cruising. I love my OD6. It shifts better than the new M8 trannys do. It's also much easier to get into neutral than stock gearsets.

No, I don't work for Baker, nor do I get one red cent from them in any way. (But, I DO have their compensator in my Dyna.)
