2mm on an axle adjustment is a lot. 1/2 might be OK I would prefer less than 1/4 mm (about 10 thou.).

I agree, you're overthinking this. If you don't feel comfortable eyeballing it, use a scale. Pick a major mark on the scale (1", 10mm, etc.) and position it so the edges of the holes are equidistant from the mark. The mark is in the center of the hole.

The flexibility of the tool itself will preclude any greater accuracy.
