Default Reliable Power For 88” Dyna

2004 FXDXI- 88” with 510 cams, breather and Thunderheader with PCV...I think it’s 90hp/89tq

My last bike was an 01FXDX Carbed with the same breather and Thunderheader...was about 98hp/100tq

So being blunt: I’m bored. I’d decided to keep the motor near-stock for reliability purposes. It obviously doesn’t have the same get-up and go as my last bike, hit even the 01 felt like it needed more.

What are recommendations for every day reliability? Fuel Moto 98”? S&S 97”? I believe I can bump to 103” correct? I don’t want to get into a giant race motor build with compression releases and the whole nine...something I can startup daily but still have the acceleration and performance on the freeway when commuting or packed up for trips.

If I can keep the same 510 cams that would be a bonus on labor/money spent.

Cheapest is to not have to split cases; once you do sky’s the limit.
That means headwork (88’s need it), maybe S&S E-Z start 585 cams ( MUCH better than CR’s) and 95” pistons
Just my opinion...done this a few times. HQ was really good at 95” kits years ago; had some nice cams, too

My 2000 has headwork, S&S 97" pistons and 585 cams (and a bunch more small details). It's a tick shy of 110/110, and isn't temperamental or difficult in any way. Fires up instantly in hot or cool weather, idles easily in stop and go traffic, and doesn't seem to run hot. While I've never encountered "completely enough power" in any vehicle, it definitely performs well overall.

Doesn't matter how big the motor is, you'll always have the same itch for more. I'm currently looking into cams and headword for my 110" this winter.

Call Scott at Hillside-a sponsor in here. He’ll fix you right up.
I have about 20,000 reliable, trouble free miles on my 98” kit from them.

A 97" or 98" big bore with some 3cc domed pistons is about as far as you can go on those 510s aside from some headwork.
