Default Throttle response from idle

Hi all,

I have a 2007 FXD Super Glide EFI. I've been noticing over the past few weeks that I have been having problems whenever I go to roll off in 1st gear. I open throttle to start going and it sounds like it almost is going to stall out unless I give it more throttle. The throttle doesn't seem to respond well to quick snaps either, and it almost dies when doing so unless I let off of it, then it idles just fine with no problem. Once I get up to speed, (and I mean I can be on the highway) then it runs like a dream. It's only when I'm at a complete stop, at low speed in 1st or 2nd, cold or warm engine. I had it in for service for its 25k job during the winter; had fuel filter replaced, gaskets and seals around tank replaced too. It started happening shortly before I started to throw parts at whatever could have been at fault. I've cleaned the IAC sensor with throttle body cleaner, no change. Bike has little over 30k miles on it now. Trying to think of anything else that I've noticed....

What I've done so far to the bike:
  1. Replaced plugs and put SE wires on
  2. Replaced coil
  3. Stage 1 Arlen Ness Big Sucker
  4. V&H Fuelpak FP3
  5. Replaced crank sensor
  6. Fresh battery as of January 2019
  7. Tranny fluid December 2018
  8. Primary oil December 2018

I'm going to replace throttle position sensor today, and I have a new IAC motor on hand if the TPS doesn't get rid of this problem. If I were to replace the TPS, would I need to calibrate it in any way or is that just plug and play? It's just getting frustrating because the bike runs just fine otherwise. Any ideas?

Do you have any free play in your throttle? Like, can you twist the throttle at all, even a little bit, before you start getting any rev increase?

I had a similar issue but it was mainly when bike is cold. I read on this forum that you turn bike to on and wait for check engine light to go out. Then twist throttle full on, and let it fully reset. I repeated this 3 or 4 times. It was a while back and cannot remember exact method. It did help fix the issue. Maybe someone will chime in on it.

If I pull the throttle, the grip does have some freeplay.

Is it safe to assume you are cable operated and not drive-by-wire? I found that I had a lot of "slop" in my throttle at the beginning of this riding season. Turned out, the cable nut was completely loose and had backed off to where I could twist my throttle about a half inch before feeling any resistance. I tightened everything back up and now I have no play whatsoever and instant throttle response!

It's cable operated, I'll check it to be sure. But it seems like if I open the throttle even with slack taken up, it sounds like its going to die unless I give it more throttle.

To add to work I've done to it, I had the starter clutch replaced because of some awful warm and hot starts, almost like metal on metal. Haven't had that happen since then, which was March of this year.

Fuel filter may be clogged.

Fuel filter was replaced, had 25k service done on it back in January. This only happens low RPM, neutral, or rolling slow.

sounds to me like fuel filter or fuel pump issue

there are some problems that can happen when replacing the fuel filter, the lines can become very delicate or brittle if they dry out. they can get tiny pins holes and in a pressurized system can cause symptoms similar to clogged fuel filter

maybe clogged injectors

In tank fuel line. Earlier Dynas are known for this. The plastic hose rubs against the inside of the tank and wears a small hole in it thus losing some fuel pressure. You will need to pull the pump assembly out and inspect the line. Look for flat spot(s) on the ribbed hose.

You can cut that line out and replace it with a submersible rubber hose. There's older threads here that you can search for that details the fix for this. Not a big deal. I had to do this on my '09 SB. I believe I used a 3/8" line not a 5/16".
