I suppose about now I'd be disassembling the S&S travel limited lifters to make certain the travel limiters were in all 4 lifters. Use a socket with a paper towel or cloth stuffed around the inner edges of the socket to support the lifter when you take it apart and put them back together. Empty all oil from them so they are not hydraulically loaded and you know they will in fact the plunger does bottom out no guessing. Keep a good needle nose grip on the retaining wires up top. Dip them in oil before you put them back in the bores. Adjust. Good luck.

I appreciate all the input everyone. I thought the same and checked/removed the travel limiters. I didn’t try riding it but did try adjusting them an extra 2 flats. I do knowfor sure I’m on the base circle. I pulled the rocker box covers and the lifter covers. I first started at 15 flats as directed, then adjusted an extra 2 flats to see if the noise changed or went away. I made sure to let the lifters bleed down too. No luck and that’s when I called it quits and went to bed.

Oops . Further down you'll see where I suggested you might take the lifters apart to make certain the travel limiters were in fact all installed. I guess you did that part. However I found with using these lifters 6 flats slack were too noisy, 5,4 and 3 also too noisy. I ended up with 1/4 turn slack from bottomed out and lifter noise is acceptable there. You can do this in stages too if you're uncomfortable going there the first time. again. Good luck.

If you're adjusting/running without the travel limiters now (normal hydraulic lifters) I believe Scott from Hillside replied in another very recent thread at 140, as they adjust them to they run pretty darn quiet.
I'm using S&S push rods and S&S travel limited HL2T lifters. Naturally threads per inch (24 or 32) matter on the amount of slack i.e 6 flats. I too followed S&S recommendation of six and progressively ended up at 1/4 from bottomed out with the travel limiters in. Go to Hammer Performance website for a good primer on how to adjust using S&S HL2T travel limited lifters. I use a red shift cam with .575 lift on a 107 cu in twin cam. This engine hauls my 220 lb with full wind screen to 118 MPH. And no valves contacting the piston tops. Best of luck.

i checked that thread thanks for posting it. So I’m at almost 3 turns now, should I just go straight to 4? Unless I’m doing my math wrong, adjusting to 140 would mean going 34 flats (se pushrods 24 tpi). Is this correct? Anyone have any idea how far I can go before the valves contact the piston?
I started it up up before I left for work and it’s noisy but doesn’t backfire or misfire so I don’t think it bent a valve. When I originally started it I killed it as soon as it started clacking. Thanks again everyone. Dunno why this has been such a headache for me.
