I’m going to put off riding a new Softail M8 as long as possible. I have a ‘04 Dyna, and I’m not in the market for $20k bike.

If I was in the market for a 16 Dyna vs 18 FXBB, I’d probably go with the FXBB.

I'm in the same boat, but have a different opinion.

I test-rode a 2020 LR-S, 2020 Street Bob, a 17 Street Bob, and a 16 Low Rider...back to back same day. I was surprised by my own reaction, in that I actually DID NOT like the M8 & new platform at all. I didn't think there was such a thing as "too smooth" but the LR-S was a quiet rocket & super-twitchy, felt like a Kawasaki Ninja that could wheelie in 6th. The 2020 Street Bob was a bit more tame, but still twitchy as hell with no physical feedback when riding. I found myself looking for the tachometer for the first time on a Harley too, not just because of the quiet stock exhaust, but I literally couldn't feel where the RPM's were or what the bike was doing.

Then the 103's....good rumble, physical motor feedback, butt-dyno felt perfect in terms of a predictable power-band, handling was decent and braking with the single disc SB vs. the double on the LR, really wasn't that different or noticeable under normal riding conditions. Maybe it's because I'm familiar with the TC "ride & feel", maybe I'm getting too old for fast bikes, or maybe the M8 is just too different.

Ultimately, at this point, unless a dealership damn-near gives me an M8...I'll be buying a Dyna. Now to find that diamond in the rough.

Looks, motor, and everything else aside, the small tank on the new “Street Bob” would be a deal killer for me. As soon as I saw it come out I saw what they were trying to do. The MoCo really did their research in screwing their customer on that one, pushing anyone who wanted a larger tank into a more expensive bike right off the bat. A 3,5 gallon tank on a Big Twin? Really? There are Sportsters with larger tanks.

I bought a 2016 Street Bob new and love it. Coming off an 883 with a 3.3 gallon tank, one of the best things about it is the 4.7 gallon tank and the ability to better keep up with my friends on touring bikes as far as range.

I can’t imagine riding a Big Twin with a 3.5 gal tank with my buddies and having to make gas stops more often than a guy on a Sportster. HD really cut the legs out from someone wanting a cheaper bike that could do it all. The new Street Bob in my mind is a limited range around town bike. With the kind of riding I do that’s a no go.

(not to mention the tank design is hideous to my eye which makes it a double no go)
