Lacing new wheels

Lacing new wheels
I'm in the process of changing my wheels over on my 06 Street Bob. I bought an extra set of hubs and rims to rebuild them without having to take off the current ones. So I could keep riding. Bottom line I'm in the process of putting them together and was wondering if the spacer between the bearings is needed? And what the purpose is? The wheels I bought to convert I found out had 25mm bearings installed and I need 1 inch for my year. I have the new bearings and I measured the spacer which appears to be 1 inch inner diameter but I'm assuming that needs to be slightly larger since this was used with the 25mm bearings originally? But I'm really trying to figure out what the spacers main purpose is and if it's needed? If it is I'm assuming I'll need to pick up 2 spacers that coincide with the 1 inch bearings and axle? Any info would be great.

Yes, the spacer is needed, your bearing don't always bottom out in the hub. The purpose of the bearing spacer is to ensure you set the bearings at the correct depth in your hub, which puts the hub at the correct location to line your brake rotor to the caliper when using the OEM axle spacers. Your are correct about the inner diameter, 1" is 25.4mm, but I do believe 1" bearing are thicker then 25mm bearings which would require a shorter spacer to account for extra bearing thickness. You should be able to get a spacer (PN-43641-01) for the 06' wheel since it uses the same hub, just different bearings.
