Default R1 forks on a FXDC

I have a question. I have a 1994 VMAX, I t boned a car and damaged the front forks. Instead of replacing OEM forks (39mm), I am going with the USD forks off a R1, that is revalved and springs for the weight of the VMAX++, and also extended slugs and new 1" drop down triple trees. This is a relatively common upgrade for the Gen1 Vmax, if not a pricey one.

Just curious cause looking at the specs for my 2008 Dyna, most of the specs are the same or similar:

- Rake/trail Vmax 29/4.7" / dyna 29/4.7"
- weight Vmax 578 lbs / dyna 645 lbs
- wheelbase Vmax 66" / Dyna 64"
- front susp travel Vmax 5.5" / Dyna 5 "
- Wheel size Vmax 18" / Dyna 19"

I need to check the length of the R1 forks as modified to see if same length as the Dyna.

++I have a blower on the Vmax so the weight comes up about the same.

I can buy a Dyna triple tree with a 1" drop. Any reason that the R1 set up for the Vmax would not work on a Dyna? Just not sure which has the better performance upgrade going with USD forks for a Vmax versus Dyna.

For my Dyna, I have ricor valves, traxxion straight springs and reload adjusters, but have never been happy with the ride even with all the oil weight and spacer tweaks. Rear has Prog 970s which I do like.

Anyway, just thinking about it. The Vmax already handles better than the Dyna (I changed to radial tires which solved the old handling problems) and new springs/shocks before the crash.

Another option is to call Howard at Motorcycle Metal. He has multiple high performance options that he has road tested on all the Harley platforms....including (AFAIK) the first USD forks ever used on them. He should be able to give you a great option with regard to price/performance.

As I understand it, Kraus stole Howard's design...

Like I said in my post, I already have the R1 forks that are built for the Vmax so am not going to buy another set just for the Dyna, which I know would be best. Just asking whether going this direction would be an improvement over the 49mm forks of the Dyna.

Pretty much any properly tuned aftermarket fork setup is gonna be an improvement over stock. Keywords being "properly tuned". You could slap on a kilobuck MotoGP front end and it would suck ***** until tuned.

Is the R1 able to be tuned to work with Dyna? I dunno. Maybe?

Call Brock’s v twin performance they offer various triple tree setups that work with metric forks. I know they have trees for gsxr forks to retrofit into a dyna. As said before valving would be critical to make them work good and not just look good
