If you are going to cut it to a different shape, be sure to put the bike up on a jack so it's level, or pull the fender clear off and work on it on a level bench. It's really hard to cut a fender straight when it's on a bike sitting on the sidestand.

If you are going to keep the same general shape, best to cut the forward edge, rotate the fender forward and redrill the mounting holes. This is how we did it in the days when rear fenders had a hinge to make tire changing easier.

 

Hey mud, I wasn't sure if I would like how the cut fender would look so I first came up with a patch for the brake light hole. I cut it out of aluminum diamond plate in hd's bar and sheild shape but I didn't like that So I welded the holes shut and welded and bondo the big hole shut. A little Rusteum flat black and it was done.

used duct tape to mark the cut. Took two dremel cut off wheels. Laid an old towel over the tire incase I slipped. After you remove the stock plate mount you will see screw holes. I cut mine off even with the top hole.

Rock layer I think your bike looks sick...If it was mine and the local law allowed it I would ditch the turn sigs.

 

Thanks I'm glad you like it. It's forever changing. According to theAMA I don't need turn signals in PA. I would wan't to find that out for sure before I took them off.

 

i just taped up the whole fender w/ blue painter's tape...marked my line...and used a cordless sabre saw to make the cut..then smoothed it out w/ a small file...since i cut mine so short,i also had to modify the 2 flat pieces[inside] that hold the fender on..when it was cut,the lil clips that held the signal wires tight to the fender stuck out like 2" so i cut them down and powdercoated them flat black so they blended in better...

Like Jimbo says, you could shiitcan the signals and use hand signals.
I did for about the first fifteen years of ridin.
Don't remember when they started puttin em on.
It's a hassle but you do want other drivers to know what you're about to do.

Looks like mMike has the short standoffs. Doesn't look bad with the shorttailed fender.

I like some lighted indicators, so I used some small LEDs, pic below.
I also use hand signals if I see someone close behind.

Another reason I like some lights mounted, the coppers.
