Default Clutch Lever Moves when Accelerating

So, the other day, I was accelerating pretty hard in 3rd gear and my fingers were laying on the clutch lever. I noticed that the clutch lever would move in when I gave it more throttle. This would happen in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears under hard acceleration. But didn't notice it in 5th or 6th or under normal riding.

Is this normal? I usually don't have my fingers resting on the clutch lever. My clutch is adjusted properly, I think, doesn't slip and doesn't creep at a stop, fully engages and disengages. The release is about 1/4" from the grip.

Interestingly, I remember mine did that a few years ago after I had the clutch cable replaced at the Sturgis rally. I had never noticed it before. I didn't like the way he routed it, so when I got home I loosened it at the barrel adjuster, disconnected it from the lever, rerouted and readjusted the barrel adjuster. Didn't do it anymore after that. I have no idea why.

I do have a AIM VPC clutch, not sure if that had anything to do with it.

I always ride with my fingers on the clutch lever, so I noticed it right away.

The clutch begins to engage 1/4" off the grip? If so, your adjustment is off and the clutch plates will drag. I keep my clutch pack at a near 1 turn out from light seat to keep the friction zone closer to the grip for slow speed exercises and it engages further out than that.

HD calls for a 1/2 to 1 full turn of the pushrod screw after light seat. I'd adjust the clutch pack and the clutch cable freeplay :: cold :: and see what you've got then. A friction zone at either ends of the lever travel isn't adjusted quite right...

Just want to say this post (and many others like it) I'm quoting is one reason I'm on this forum. I'm not wrenching much yet, but I'll make damn sure I check in here with you pros first.

Carry on fellas and good luck OP.

I have had a problem with my clutch for a while now with it getting loose and i adjust and it get loose again to where i have no adjustment threads on the the clutch cable
left and have to loosen the cable completely off and then take the derby cover off and make the adjustment of the clutch pack like i should and tighten everything up and start all over and it does it again.
I thought at first it was my clutch cable breaking so bought a new one but they both measured the same but i still put the new one in.
The latest thing i noticed is the cable (clutch lever) getting looser under power and snapping back on deceleration like jcanrun's first post.Does it in first through 4th but not in 5th or 6th.
Not sure what is going on but cant figure it out.

Default Investigate soon

I changed gearbox oil (Red Line 80W140 GL-5 Gear Oil) late last year and soon after I noticed the clutch lever moving slightly in 4th and 5th.
The clutch cable was slightly looser than it should be so in January I adjusted the cable tighter as it should have been.
This resulted in clutch slip in 4th and 5th.
I adjusted the clutch cable lose (out) so it's only just enough movement to work.
1st was ok,
2nd was ok,
3rd clutch lever has a little movement on acceleration/deceleration,
4th slack on acceleration - tight on deceleration,
5th very tight on acceleration (& slight slipping ) – slack on deceleration
6th was ok.
I removed the primary chain casing and the entire clutch basket moved in and out nearly 1/4" which was how the cable was moving in and out. QED
I removed the clutch armature cover and inner casing and the rear gearbox bearing only had half the ***** it should have.

2014 Dyna FLD 103. 29k miles

Don't delay - check it out before it explodes on the motorway.

A little bit of movement is normal. It's slack in the trap door bearing and the fact that there are helical cut gears in the tranny. Too much and you got what the guy above has..
