[:@]I was changing my fluids for the 1000 mile checkup yesterday and when I drained the primary, I found metal shavings. Has anybody else noticed this when they changed theirs?

 

Oh yes, that is typical during break in. That is why you change at 1000 because this is the period of extreme wear as the parts all begining to mesh.

 

That is common on the 1st 1000 miles, it should almost disapper after that. I would however not go as long as the manual on your fluids, especially during the summer. I change my crankcase at 3000 miles, primary at 6000, and transmission at 12000. I am running at the rate of about 12000 miles per year. I also switched to Mobil 1 V-Twin SYN 20W-50 in crankcase and primary and Mobil 1 Syn Gear Oil 75w-90 in the transmission. I started doing that at about 4000 miles, the next change after the 1000 mile checkup.

 

pretty standard to find some material in the oil during break in. misc. engine building debree, casting flash from the block. you name it. you should see what we find in the oil on bmw's at work. first oil change is at about 15000 miles on them.

 

Ok then, thanks guys. I was wondering, because there were some nice sized pieces of metal on that magnet. I ended up using mobil 1 synt in all three holes. I still here some crazy noises coming from the Primary side at random times, but I'm still not sure what it might be. It usually comes in the form of high pitch buzzing. It has done it twice.

 

Mine looked like glitter coming out on my first change... & all over the plug too...

Aluminum........ anyway.. at 1k was like glitter, at 5k still glitter at 7900 k inner primary bearing and mainshaft race..went out...sold me on the extended warranty.. if you use the search feature there is lotsa threads on bum bearings , also in my gallery is a photo of my primary drain plug... You 'll know it if it goes , sounds like a old steel roller skate.. synthetic since 1k amsoil.. have a great day.....

 

Why do you think that plug is magnetic? It's meant to trap any wayward shavings from the engine build.

Stupid question, but does performing your own 1000 mile service void the warranty in any way? Sorry for highjacking.

 

No not at all. Just keep your receipts for oil and make a log of the service dates. I write my oil service dates in my owners manual.
