Starting troubles
I just bought a 84 superglide. I've been having some troubles starting it. When I hit the start button, most of the time the starter will engage turning the motor slowly at first then it seems to pick up like normal until it acts like the starter gear retracts and makes a terrible noise. I've had the battery tested, and changed the soilenoid thinking that was the problem, with no avail. Has anyone had this problem or recognize something I don't????

RE: Starting troubles
It could be a bum starter clutch that does not engage all the way and then retracts. If the starter does spin the motor, but very slowly at first and then speeds up as described, it sounds like it is drawing an awful load at the begining. Check your ground cables and you may want to thing about adding a second ground cable, or the entire starter could be crapping out. If it is the original starter in a 1984 SG, it may be time for a new one.
