When I hit a pot hole or a bump on road , it sounds like my tank or something is loose . I've heard it numerous of time . Have any of you guys encountered this problem, where should I start ?

 

Gee, maybe start with the tank. Make sure the bolts are torqued down. If that cures it, go no further.
If not, check the front engine mount.

 

I recently did the tank lift and used Loc tight on bolts and torqued them down to specs . But I heard that noise last season also . I'll try the motor mount , and triple trees . Any one know where I can find torque specs and I'll just check everything that I can ,

 

It can't hurt to double check the tank bolts. Also the heat shields.
A bad motor mount should be obvious, but if you can't see that the rubber is trashed, get a pry bar between the frame and motor and see if there's a lot of movement.

Have a look at the connectors and such under the tank, one of those might be bouncing and ringing off the bottom of the tank ... a simple tie-wrap might fix.

 

Check heat shields and make sure your steering neck is adjusted for the proper fall-away. When the tree gets loose, it can 'thump' once in awhile.

 

I did a tank lift. Developed a rattle months later Front tank bolts were tight. Needed to be even tighter

 

Just my opinion, do the fall away check, and I think the clunk will go away, lots of Fatbobs had this, and another thing was the tube in the front forks with the springs needs to be 1 cm longer.

 

Ok , I've got the bike in the air . Checked for freeplay in the steer stem seems fine but wouldn't hurt to replace since the bike is 8+ yrs old ( 3200 miles ) . More concerned about the age and not the miles . Torque on motor mount is fine also , I noticed the shifter seems to be very loose side to side . Is this normal ?

 

Just tested the motor mount with pry bar , looks like that just might be my problem. How much movement should I have if any ?
