Default Removing License Plate frame FXDL - WTF?

So I want to install the Kuryakyn lay back license plate frame. I went to remove the existing bracket. I have no clue how to get the 3 phillip heads out. The bracket is blocking access.

I checked the service manual and I can't find anything for the bracket. Can anyone shed some light?

What's on the back side? Captive nuts of some type or loose nuts?

I like my Chapman ratchet for stuff like this. Sometimes a 1/4 hex drive bit with a universal joint socket taped over it. Sometimes a bit with a combination wrench.

I've had one of the Chapman sets for more than 20 years. They are great

I took one off my in laws Fxdb not sure if it's the same brand, but looked identical. I took a long screwdriver and gently pulled the rear back a little and I was able to take it off. At work I often use a 1/4 inch socket and just put a Phillips bit in it. Another favorite of mine, but cheap craftsman screwdrivers, heat them with a torch, then bend them to where you need them. So far I have about 9 craftsman "special tools".

Thanks as always CG and hope you're feeling well. After I saw this pic I ran out to Lowes (less than 1/2 mile from my house) and bought something similar. That won't clear it either.

So I stopped being lazy and jacked it up. There were loose nuts so I just cranked those out.

Funny thing is, if I had to put it back on, I still wouldn't have something to hold the phillip heads as I crank it back. Being a mechanical idiot though, these were locking nuts so maybe that prevents the philip head bolts from spinning as you crank them back in.

Thanks all for the replies.
