Default Low Rider air cleaner question

Since this is my first Harley I am slowly learning about this bike. I found out the previous owner had a hyper charger attached to a screaming eagle carburetor but now it just has a stock air filter with no backplate. I ordered an air cleaner cover thinking thats all I needed but as I said earlier, I'm slowly learning about this bike, so just the cover won't work will it? Do i need a backplate as well? Hopefully the picture attached so you can see what I'm referring to. Thanks for helping

No backing plate is needed, that is how a Stage-I air cleaner is, with no backing plate.

Thanks for the reply. Yep, I rode to the Harley shop today and the service guy told me the same thing! So, I'm good to go!

That's a Mikuni HSR42. Kind of a unique bird with regard to air cleaner and backing plate/mounting bracket.

Make sure the fuel bowl isn't hitting the fins on the cylinders. They need to be clearanced if it hasn't been done. Cracked mounting brackets often result if not.

There is also an adapter required to mount Harley air cleaner assemblies. It's a cast metal donut with three threaded holes on the outside and a fat o-ring on the inside.

As long as your setup is all properly aligned and tight, and the back side of the air cleaner is closed so it doesn't allow unfiltered air in, you should be fine.

+1 with cggorman with the carb, that is not a stock carb. The mounting screws for the filter to the carb looks like a little jerry manding going on. That will work, if you want something cleaner visit an independent (indy) Harley shop for some assist or visit JP Cycles website.

No big deal. I had to grind 4 fin corners, IIRC. I used some big side cutters/dikes and rough cut them then cleaned it up with a dremel. Took maybe an hour and only the closest inpsection would reveal the mod.

This is the only pic I've got that shows a modified fin...
